Crisis care and protection

Depending on how trafficked and exploited children come to the attention of support services their reactions and needs will differ.

Some children may be very angry and aggressive and feel they have been 'captured' rather than 'rescued'. Others may be depressed and withdrawn. Some children will oscillate between both states.  

Children who have been abused and exploited for a long period of time may have developed a relationship with their abusers and in some cases may wish to return to them for a number of different reasons. For all children they are are likely to be confronted with a new, unfamiliar and daunting environment - whether that is a new residential placement or an interview room.

At the crisis stage the most important thing is to make the child feel safe and secure. An assessment should be carried out to respond to the individual needs of the child along with a thorough risk assessment.
